Quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil have seven champions and a runner-up in the fight for millionaire prizes

Of the group, seven have already won the competition title at least once, collecting a total of 20 cups. The only one that has not yet become champion is Vitória, who came second in 2010, against Neymar's Santos.

The draw for the quarter-final clashes is scheduled for next Tuesday (11), at 11 am (Brasília time), at the headquarters of the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation), in Rio de Janeiro. The round-trip departures are scheduled to take place between August 26th and September 3rd.

The CBF also announced on Thursday (6) that the quarter-final matches will feature semi-automatic offside technology, which has already been adopted in the Brazilian Championship.

Champion in 1992, Inter eliminated Corinthians (current champion), in the Neo Química Arena, in São Paulo, while Vitória managed to reverse the two-goal deficit by scoring 4-0 against Athletico-PR (which they won in 2019), at Barradão, in Salvador.

Between Tuesday (4) and Wednesday (5), Vasco (champion in 2011) passed Fluminense (who won in 2007); Grêmio (champion in 1989, 1994, 1997, 2001 and 2016) beat Mirassol; Atlético-MG (champion in 2014 and 2021) overcame Juventude (who won the title in 1999); and Santos (champion in 2010) eliminated Remo.

In addition to them, Cruzeiro (greatest champion of the Copa do Brasil, with titles in 1993, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2017 and 2018) beat Chapecoense; and Palmeiras (champion in 1998, 2012, 2015 and 2020) got the better of Fortaleza.

Now there are ten consecutive editions in which the quarter-finals have at least one "intruder" who has never lifted the championship trophy.

In 2025, Botafogo reached the quarterfinals -whose best result was runner-up in 1999-, eliminated by Vasco, and Bahia -whose best result is the quarter-final stage, reached ten times-, defeated by Fluminense.

In 2024, Bahia had also been the only non-champion team in the quarterfinals, eliminated on that occasion by Flamengo. In 2023, the Bahian team was joined by América-MG, eliminated by Corinthians and Grêmio, respectively.

In 2022, Atlético Goianiense, América-MG and Fortaleza arrived, defeated by Corinthians, São Paulo and Fluminense. In 2021, Fortaleza had been the only non-champion in the quarterfinals, reaching the semifinals, when they fell to Atlético-MG.

In 2020, it was the turn of Cuiabá, Ceará and América-MG. The first two were eliminated by Grêmio and Palmeiras. The Minas Gerais team passed Internacional and fell in the next stage against Palmeiras.

In 2019, Bahia again, eliminated by Grêmio; in 2018, Bahia and Chapecoense, eliminated by Palmeiras and Corinthians, respectively; and in 2017, Botafogo, which passed Atlético-MG and ended up in the semifinals against Flamengo.

In 2016, the eight quadruple-finalists had already lifted the cup at least once: Atlético-MG, Corinthians, Cruzeiro, Grêmio, Internacional, Juventude, Palmeiras and Santos.

JUMP IN PRIZE VALUE FROM 2018

Throughout history, the Copa do Brasil has been the stage for some of the biggest upsets in Brazilian football, which has earned it the nickname "the most democratic competition" in the country.

In 2004, Santo André, then in Series B, left Atlético-MG and Palmeiras on the way, beating Flamengo of Júlio César and Athirson in the decision.

The following year, it was the turn of Paulista de Jundiaí, who went through Botafogo and Internacional and beat Fluminense in the final.

One of the most remembered cases occurred in 2002, when the small ASA de Arapiraca defeated Palmeiras in the first phase.

In recent years, however, the increase in prizes for teams that go further in the tournament has reduced the space for surprises.

Until 2017, the champion received R$6 million, an amount that increased by 730% to R$50 million, as of 2018, when CBF signed a new broadcasting rights contract with Rede Globo.

Since then, the values have been on an increasing trajectory, reaching R$78 million for the champion, and R$34 million for the runner-up, in the 2026 edition.
