Police investigate death of lawyer found on road in Mogi Mirim (SP)

The body showed signs of aggression and was located in the fetal position. The identification of the victim, aged 30, took place on Monday (3). A completely burned car was also found in the same region.

He had disappeared after leaving home on Saturday (1st) night. One of the police's lines of investigation is a hate crime. Investigators did not provide details about the investigation.

A graduate of PUC (Pontifical Catholic University), Lopes was a PwD (person with a disability), lived in Campinas and was a doctoral student at the Faculty of Law of USP (University of São Paulo), supervised by professor Eunice Prudente, from the Department of State Law.

He researched human rights, inclusion and protection of vulnerable groups. According to the family, the lawyer had the objective of working in the Public Ministry.

In the master's degree, supervised by professor Guilherme Assis de Almeida, the dissertation's theme was "The right to be in the world: the affirmation of the rights of people with disabilities in the Court of Justice of the State of São Paulo in light of the UN convention on the rights of people with disabilities".

In a statement, the USP board lamented the student's death and made itself available to help the family in any way possible.

Lopes was a member of the Commission on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities of the Subsection of the OAB (Brazilian Bar Association) in Campinas.

"Dr. Lucas combined experience and technical knowledge in favor of a more inclusive law practice, leaving relevant contributions wherever he went. His departure leaves a gap in the law practice and in the movement for inclusion", says a note released by the subsection.

The OAB lamented the cruelty of the case and demanded action to investigate the crime.

The lawyer was also director-secretary of the Casa da Criança Paralítico, in Campinas, between 2023 and the beginning of 2026. According to the institution, he was committed and deeply involved in defending the rights of people with disabilities and combating prejudice.

He was buried on Tuesday (4) at the Parque de Hortolândia Cemetery.
