The images were published on social media on June 20 and quickly gained repercussion. In the video, the couple appears inside a moving car while the vehicle was traveling along one of the busiest roads in the region.
After receiving reports, the police located the car and identified the two people involved. The driver was charged with negligent driving, while both were fined for not wearing their seat belts, according to Spanish newspaper ABC.
The couple, made up of foreign tourists, had rented the vehicle during a short stay in Malaga. The fines were paid at the time of the stop.
In a statement, the Civil Guard thanked the people who reported the case for their collaboration. The corporation stated that the notifications demonstrate the population's awareness and rejection of behaviors that put traffic safety at risk.
Belt use is also mandatory in Portugal
In Portugal, the Highway Code determines that drivers and passengers of motor vehicles use seat belts and other mandatory devices.
Failure to comply with the rule can result in a fine of 120 to 600 euros and the loss of three points on your driver's license, as it is a very serious infraction.
The legislation provides for some exceptions. People who present a medical certificate for serious health reasons may be exempt from wearing a belt, as long as the document follows the model approved by the Ministry of Health and is within the validity period.
Security force agents, police officers, firefighters and rescue professionals are also exempt, in certain situations and within localities, when the characteristics of the mission justify the exemption. Taxi drivers can also stop using the equipment while transporting passengers.
