Boss arrested on suspicion of killing missing cook in Ubatuba
The São Paulo Civil Police concluded that the cook Berenice Ramos de Aguiar Faria, aged 60, was the victim of homicide. She disappeared on June 30, after leaving the inn where she worked in Ubatumirim, in Ubatuba, on...
The main suspect in the crime is the owner of the establishment, who allegedly gave the employee a ride on the day of her disappearance. The woman was temporarily arrested during the investigation conducted by the São Sebastião General Investigations Police Station.
To date, Berenice's body has not been found. The police continue efforts to locate the victim and clarify how the murder occurred.
The day before she disappeared, the cook told one of her children that she had been laid off because of the low season. According to the report, she was waiting for payment of the amounts related to her dismissal to return to Igaratá, in Vale do Paraíba, where she lived.
On the morning of June 30, Berenice was still in contact with her daughter via messages. Later, she left the inn on a ride offered by her boss, who claimed to have taken her to the access junction to Rodovia Oswaldo Cruz. The businesswoman was the last person known to have seen the cook.
According to José Carlos de Faria Filho, one of the victim's three children, Berenice stopped responding to her family that same afternoon. The last cell phone signal was identified around 11 am on July 1st, somewhere in Ubatuba, without a precise indication of the neighborhood.
When searching for information at the mother's place of work, the family discovered that she and the inn owner had argued. The boss declared that she had paid R$2,600 in cash to the cook before taking her to the highway.
The suspect also stated that Berenice had gotten a new job in the Praia das Toninhas region. The version was contested by family members, who said that she intended to return home and was unlikely to fail to inform her children about a change of plans.
In the police report, José Carlos highlighted that the mother had no history of chemical dependency or any known condition that could explain a voluntary disappearance. Berenice is the mother of two men and one woman.
