CAMPINAS, SP (FOLHAPRESS) - A woman discovered that she was still pregnant after being diagnosed with a miscarriage by her gynecologist and undergoing a curettage, a scraping procedure to clean the uterus after the termination of the pregnancy - carried out, in this case, with the fetus alive.

The case took place at the Sumaré State Hospital, in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas, in the interior of São Paulo. The unit is managed by Unicamp (State University of Campinas) and is among the best in the SUS (Unified Health System) in the country.

In a note, the institution states that it opened an inquiry to investigate the case and provided support and care to the patient. The error would have occurred due to a violation of protocols by the doctor on duty who, according to the patient, confirmed the miscarriage only through a physical examination. In similar cases, it is common to carry out other procedures to assess the interruption.

The pregnant woman reported what happened to Folha on condition of anonymity. Due to the failure, your pregnancy is considered high risk and requires constant monitoring until delivery. She is under the care of Caism, Unicamp's Women's Hospital.

As stated, she went to the hospital on July 12, then 12 weeks pregnant, after bleeding. After undergoing screening, she was seen by the doctor on duty, who performed a physical examination and confirmed the miscarriage, alleging an unusual opening of the uterus.

Then, says the woman, the doctor ordered curettage immediately. There was no request for an ultrasound as the exam would not be working due to it being a Sunday.

Once the curettage was completed, the patient was discharged and given a 14-day certificate, during which time she experienced grief for having lost her son, as reported.

After his medical leave, he returned to work, but noticed that his belly was not shrinking. Additionally, I felt nausea, lower back pain and breast enlargement. Until then, the pregnant woman interpreted the signs as a psychological remnant of the interrupted pregnancy.

When she noticed that the signs did not disappear, she went to a doctor she trusted a month later and requested contraceptives. To do so, he says, the professional required a pregnancy test, the result of which was positive. Then he did a blood test and the conclusion was the same.

The woman claims that she sought out a friend in the health sector for support. One of the hypotheses put forward by the friend, who discussed the case with an obstetrician, was a molar pregnancy, something like a benign tumor growing in the uterus. The recommendation was to urgently return to the hospital.

On August 14, the woman returned to the Sumaré State Hospital with the positive result in hand. The doctor, according to the report, raised two possibilities: a molar pregnancy, or a new pregnancy. She underwent an ultrasound.

During the examination, the patient heard, next to the doctor, a heart beating, and the comment that there was a fetus there.

The health professional then asked how many gestational weeks the abortion had occurred. When answering 12 weeks, the patient heard from the obstetrician that it was the same fetus, as it was 16 weeks old.

The woman was incredulous. The prognosis, however, was negative. Due to the curettage, there was no amniotic fluid in the gestational sac, an essential fluid for the development of the child's lungs and bones. For this reason, there is a risk of the baby being born with pulmonary hypoplasia and progressing to death. The patient states that she was offered two options: continue with the pregnancy or terminate it. She would have to choose in the short term. On August 17, she chose to continue with the pregnancy. According to an account, a doctor stated that the bag had probably been punctured during curettage.

In addition to the risk to the child, the patient is also at risk of sepsis.

In a statement, the Sumaré State Hospital said that it regrets what happened and that it has opened an investigation to investigate the conduct related to the patient's care. If irregularities are found, appropriate measures will be adopted, according to the institution.

The unit also stated that it is committed to offering qualified assistance.
