The European Space Agency (ESA) released a video taken by the Meteosat Third Generation Imager (MTG-I1) satellite, in which it is possible to follow the movement of the Moon's shadow over the Earth's surface.

The phenomenon occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, totally or partially blocking sunlight in certain regions. In the record released by ESA, the shadow band can be seen advancing over different points on the European continent.

MTG-I1 operates in geostationary orbit around 36,000 kilometers from the Earth's surface, keeping its instruments aimed mainly at Europe and North Africa.

According to the agency, this position allowed the satellite to follow the path of the so-called totality band. The shadow first passed through Greenland and Iceland, reached a small region in northeastern Portugal and then advanced over Spain.

The images offer a broad view of the phenomenon and clearly show the displacement of the lunar shadow as the eclipse occurred.

Astronaut followed phenomenon from the Space Station

The eclipse also drew attention aboard the International Space Station. French astronaut Sophie Adenot, who is currently in the structure, took the opportunity to talk about the experience of observing the phenomenon from space.

"Hello everyone, hello from Space, from the International Space Station. Here we are, orbiting the Earth 400 kilometers above you, and one of the things we love to see most from here is how beautiful this planet is. It's so beautiful and it's all connected. It's like a shared home," he said.

The astronaut also highlighted that millions of people followed the same phenomenon in different places on the planet.

"And you know what? Today, millions of people are sharing the same experience. They will be looking up together as the Moon passes in front of the Sun. From here, we see 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets every day. I must say it is a beautiful reminder of how the Solar System works," he said.

"So wherever you are, whether in Europe or on another continent, I just want you to enjoy it, stay curious. I'm sending lots of good vibes from Space for the solar eclipse", added Sophie Adenot.
