"I have a huge affection for these animals and I know what human presence causes and everything that we do to them. Through drone recordings, I have tried to awaken the importance of us preserving and seeking all possible means to guarantee a safe environment for them. They have been there for a long time, so we have to seek all possible means [to protect them]", argues the engineer. The recording was made by a drone, more than 100 meters high, so as not to disturb the animal. In the late afternoon of the same day, Reck returned to the beach and, again, observed and recorded the whale. With the equipment's battery nearing its end, the environmental engineer was returning the drone when he found, midway, a group of rays. "The ray is also an incredible being. It is a marine species that arouses a lot of curiosity. For me, it was exciting to have found that group. They were organized in a symmetrical, enchanting geometric formation. It was a gift to have managed to capture the images", he shares. According to the Marine Biodiversity Recovery Program (REBIMAR), during the winter period, several species of migratory animals pass through the Great Atlantic Forest Reserve. Along the way, they find food and safe places to rest. Renata Daldin Leite, the program's researcher, details that the region is a kind of "nursery" for several species, including rays. "It is a very important area for calving, it is a region where they have a lot of food available and it is a region that serves as a refuge. This entire region associated with the Great Atlantic Forest Reserve is very important for the conservation of these species. They are sentinel species. Through studying them and their health, we are able to get an overview of the health of the ecosystem as a whole", explains the researcher.
