União Brasil decided, at a convention held this Thursday (30), in Cuiabá, to support the candidacy for re-election of governor Otaviano Pivetta (Republicans). The decision represents a political victory for former governor Mauro Mendes, state president of the party, who defended the alliance with Pivetta.

As a result, the thesis of his own candidacy for the State Government, defended by senator Jayme Campos, was rejected. The vote also exposed the party's internal division.

In total, there were 30 votes in favor of supporting Pivetta, against 19 votes for Jayme Campos' candidacy. There was also one null vote. Among the 51 conventional voters eligible to vote, only one abstention was recorded, that of delegate Luiz Fernando Falcão, from Santo Afonso.

The convention was marked by an atmosphere of tension, exchanges of criticism and booing between the groups. After the result, Jayme's supporters expressed dissatisfaction with the decision.

Before the vote, state deputy Dilmar Dal Bosco, an ally of Jayme, accused Mauro Mendes of treason. The former governor countered, stating that it was a “political option”.

Another supporter of his own candidacy, state deputy Júlio Campos also questioned Mendes during the convention. He challenged the validity of the voting ballot, claiming that the text could open the door for the appointment of a vice-president on Pivetta's ticket.

"On the ballot and in this vote there is no mention of the candidate for vice-governor. Therefore, your point of order is harmless and I reject it", replied Mendes.

Even with the victory of the group in favor of the alliance with Pivetta, part of the mainstream booed Mauro Mendes during the event. The result ends the formal dispute within União Brasil, but makes the internal division of the party evident.
