Drone shows work on an underground retaining wall at Praia Central de Balneário Camboriú Work on the six-kilometer underground retaining wall at Praia Central de Balneário Camboriú, on the North Coast of Santa Catarina, has reached the final stretch of the Barra Sul stretch. The objective is to protect the future beach promenade against high tide. The work occupies the strip of sand and has a winding layout. Aerial images show that the concrete structure that abuts the land excavated in curves along the beach (watch above). ?Click and follow the g1 SC channel on WhatsApp The reinforced concrete structure will be more than two meters deep and will function as a containment and barrier against erosion, according to the municipality. The work is part of the waterfront redevelopment project, estimated at more than R$31 million in total. ? The section that is about to be completed, that of Barra Sul, goes from number 4770 Avenida Atlântica to Rua 4400, an extension of 400 meters, according to the Municipal Secretariat of Planning and Urban Development. 100 meters to go. The ministry reported that work on this part of the wall should end in August. Work on the stretch must continue with the other stages, including the sidewalk, lighting and landscaping. To carry out the work, it was necessary to provide an environmental license from the Santa Catarina Environmental Institute (IMA) and authorization from the Union Heritage Secretariat (SPU). ??This is not the first major project in Praia Central. In 2021, the coast underwent a widening in 2021, which increased the sand strip from 25 to 70 meters. Work on the coastal protection wall at Praia Central de Balneário Camboriú PMBC/Disclosure How does the containment wall work? The new promenade is part of the Praia Central redevelopment project and will be built on top of the sand. As the tide can wash away this sand, the construction wall is made so that the sea does not pull back the structure of the new boardwalk. The idea is that the sea hits the protective wall and returns. The structure even follows the curves of the new boardwalk. The beach has had another protective wall since the 1980s. According to the city hall, there has been a coastal protection wall since the 1980s, which protects the current promenade at Praia Central. Without it, the boardwalk could have been washed away by high tide. The city hall's director of Special Projects, Bruno Nitz, explained that this wall built in the 1980s will continue. However, at the beginning of the macrodrainage works (read more about them below), as the work was carried out very close to the structure, it ended up being broken. As the team decided to maintain the original wall, in practice, two structures will remain. "We moved the layout of the [macrodrainage work] a little bit further away from the wall and were able to carry out all the macrodrainage work without breaking the wall", explained the director. The city hall did not detail the structural difference between the two walls nor did it explain the reason for the decision to maintain the old structure. Puddles of water appeared on the sand of Praia Central After the widening work, in 2021, puddles of water similar to natural pools began to appear on the shore during periods of high tide, attracting the attention of visitors and generating questions about the effects of this expansion. According to the city hall, the wall made of reinforced concrete (concrete junction with steel bars) and stone base will function as coastal protection to prevent the formation of these accumulations of water. The containment will be built between the sandbank area and the pedestrian walkway, which are also part of the redevelopment. The redevelopment work began in November 2023. The plan foresees the expansion of the promenade, a seaside garden with leisure areas, kiosks, lighting and three exercise spaces. In total, the city hall wants to reurbanize 6 kilometers of waterfront. The interventions will be carried out gradually in the proposed sections. Work on the entire beach is expected to last six years. In addition to the retaining wall, other works are being carried out in the Praia Central redevelopment project. See the rest of the work below. Macrodrainage galleries At the moment, macrodrainage works are taking place in the northern part of the beach, leaving only the intervention on Rua 1400, which will begin soon. The southern stage of the macro-drainage is in the bidding process and foresees the installation of galleries between Rua 2000 and Rua 3950. In the section where the reurbanization work is currently taking place, including the coastal protection wall, there is no need for macro-drainage, only conventional drainage interventions. The director informed that the tender for the macro-drainage works in the southern area of ??the beach has already been launched. As 2026 is an election year and, after the election, it is already close to the high season, work should begin after the 2027 carnival. Promenade The pilot section, already completed and located between 4400 and 4600 streets, will undergo some modifications, such as the installation of kiosks after the promenade is completed. In addition, some trees will be planted on the stretch, with the aim of expanding the green areas. The first 200 meters of the new boardwalk should be delivered by November, in the section where the coastal protection wall is built. Sandbank The sandbank will be one of the last steps to be carried out, precisely to preserve the vegetation. As the work suffers several interferences during execution, keeping the sandbank area close to the intervention site could harm the development of the plants, especially due to the movement of equipment, machinery and teams.
