The measure, adopted by Donald Trump based on Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, aims to protect American polysilicon manufacturers from Chinese competition. ? Polysilicon, a form of high-purity silicon, is one of the raw materials used in the manufacture of chips and solar energy equipment. Manufacturers transform silicon wafers into solar cells, which are then assembled into modules, or panels, used to generate solar energy. The measures will take effect on December 4, the Trump administration said. According to a White House document, Trump established minimum import prices of US$21 per kilogram for polysilicon, US$100 per kilogram for polysilicon ingots and sheets, US$0.22 per watt for solar cells and US$0.38 per watt for solar modules. The measure also authorizes the Department of Commerce to create an incentive program for companies that invest in polysilicon factories or derived products.
