Workers are rescued from conditions similar to slavery in Virmond Workers rescued from a quarry in Virmond, a city of 3,800 inhabitants in the central region of Paraná, told the police that they were prevented from leaving the place and were "trapped in service" due to the owner saying that the workers owed him debts for feeding them. The employer is 48 years old and is being investigated by the Civil Police for subjecting workers to situations similar to slavery. According to delegate Luís Leopoldo de Andrade Oliveira Manoel, the workers were kept in makeshift accommodation, with precarious conditions — without sewage, running water or storage space for food, for example. They still received low wages, with the justification that their food and housing were deducted from their value. ? Initially, explains the delegate, two workers were found in these conditions: one aged 39 and the other aged 49. However, while the team was carrying out the inspection, two other workers arrived and stated that they had also been subjected to those conditions for around a year. The quarry owner was not there, and voluntarily presented himself at the police station the following day. The delegate states that the man denied the crimes, but did not present any proof of payment or other document to prove his version.
