Dog lost in flood returns home 2 years later in RS: 'I recognized it by the look' A dog that had been lost during the floods of May 2024 in Rio Grande do Sul returned home more than two years later, this Thursday (9), after its owner recognized it in a list of missing animals on the Canoas city hall website, in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre, where she lives. The little dog Tigre had been adopted shortly before the flood and ended up lost from his family during the rescue, says owner Giovana Menneman Machado. "I went to the Secretariat's website to adopt a puppy and I recognized his look and his little ears. The Tiger is a member of our family and this reunion was exciting", celebrated the owner. ? "We adopted Tiger shortly before the flood, after losing another family dog. During the flood, he was rescued and ended up separated from us. We spent more than a year looking for him and never lost hope", reports the owner. During the entire period of the flood, in the month of May, there were 20 thousand animals in shelters, according to the Government of RS. In August 2024, the government announced a program for the adoption of these animals. A state government platform was even created to bring together lost animals and potential adopters – the service is offline, in accordance with electoral legislation. R$ 7.2 million were allocated to the 95 municipalities in a calamity situation due to the floods. Of the total, R$5.6 million went to monthly aid for city halls in the amount of R$188.85 per sheltered or sheltered animal — for food, veterinary care and supplies.
