ANM charges more than R$17 billion from Vale in late royalties in Pará The National Mining Agency (ANM) formalized a charge of more than R$17.7 billion against the mining company Vale and its subsidiary Salobo Metais for alleged debts related to the Financial Compensation for the Exploration of Mineral Resources (CFEM), known as mining royalties. The notification was published in the Official Gazette of the Union and brings together 43 administrative processes. Companies have 10 days to make payment or present a defense. If the debt is not paid, the debt can be included in the Union's Active Debt. The majority of the amount charged is related to operations carried out in Pará. According to ANM, more than R$12 billion of the total correspond to processes involving the state, which represents around 70% of the collection. Another approximately R$5.3 billion refers to operations in Minas Gerais. In a note, Vale informed that it regularly collects the CFEM and follows the applicable standards and existing constitutional limits. The company also stated that it understands that the aforementioned charges are unfounded and that it will respond to the competent authorities at the appropriate time. CFEM is financial compensation paid by companies that explore mineral resources. The value is calculated based on the revenue obtained from the sale of extracted minerals and is distributed among the Union, states and producing municipalities. The R$17.7 billion represents more than double the total collected by Brazil from mining royalties in the entire year 2025.
