(FOLHAPRESS) - Sandra Bullock, 61, spoke about the death of Bryan Randall, her partner of eight years, in a rare interview about her personal life. The photographer died in August 2023, at the age of 57, after facing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Participating in the "Smartless" podcast, the actress stated that Randall asked that the illness be kept confidential. During part of the period, only Bullock's sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, knew about the diagnosis.

"He asked me not to share. I know why he asked me not to share," he said. According to the actress, keeping her condition a secret ended up increasing her isolation during the period in which she took care of her partner and children.

The situation became even more difficult during the Covid-19 pandemic. Bullock defined that period as a "very dark triad", when balancing caring for Randall and raising the children.

Over time, she told her friends Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, wife of presenter Jason Bateman, about what she was experiencing. It was also during this period that he realized that the grief had begun before Randall's death.

"I think I started grieving Bryan's death four years before he passed away," he said. For Bullock, the illness had already altered the relationship. “My person left long before the body,” he said.

According to the actress, Randall was sick for at least half of the eight years the two were together. She stated that she was only able to process part of what she had experienced after his death, when she left behind the care routine.

Bullock and Randall began dating in 2015, after the photographer was hired to capture the actress' son Louis' fifth birthday. The couple went public with their relationship months later at a premiere in Los Angeles.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a disease that affects the nervous system in a degenerative and progressive manner and causes irreversible motor paralysis, according to the official website of the Ministry of Health. There is no cure for ALS. Patients with the disease suffer gradual paralysis and may die early as a result of the loss of crucial abilities such as speaking, moving, swallowing and even breathing.
