Regina Casé's daughter talks about hearing loss and turns experience into a play Actress Benedita Casé, daughter of presenter Regina Casé, has used theater to talk about a topic that marked her life: hearing loss. In a show inspired by the trajectory of playwright and screenwriter Júlia Spadaccini, Benedita shares personal experiences and helps to broaden the discussion about the challenges faced by people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The play presents stories that intersect on and off the stage. While interpreting Júlia's life, Benedita also reveals episodes from her own trajectory. According to the actress, she was born hearing, but health complications in the first months of her life led to the use of medications that affected her hearing. Júlia says that she began to lose her hearing at the age of 19 and received a prognosis from doctors that she could develop profound deafness throughout her life. The experience motivated the creation of the theatrical text. "Writing the play for me was a way of educating people about this deafness that is so invisible", says the playwright. Invisible deafness One of the main themes covered in the show is society's lack of understanding about different degrees of hearing loss. Benedita reports that, for a long time, she was afraid of the way she would be seen by other people. "I was actually afraid of people judging me, of being rejected, of how I would be treated from the moment they saw that I had braces, that they knew I was deaf", she says. The actress also states that she had to go through an acceptance process to speak openly about the condition. According to her, many people still believe that simply increasing the volume of their voices is enough to facilitate communication. "People have difficulty understanding. It's very common for you to arrive and start shouting, starting to speak louder. But that doesn't change, because it's not about the volume, it's about the frequency", he explains. Representation on stage In addition to portraying the difficulties imposed by hearing loss, the production seeks to increase the representation of people with disabilities in cultural spaces. For Benedita, the absence of this presence contributes to the invisibility of the theme. "If it's not there on the screen, it's not in the seats, it's not in the theater, it's completely excluded because if you don't see it, it doesn't exist", he states. The piece was also designed to be affordable. The show has resources aimed at both deaf people who use Libras and those who follow the presentation through subtitles. The proposal is to promote understanding and empathy between different audiences. By sharing her own experiences, Benedita hopes to help the subject be treated more naturally. "I think the more we talk about it and understand what's best for each other, things will work out," says the actress.
