Racial literacy and black memory are meeting themes in Teresópolis

Teresópolis hosts fifth racial literacy meeting The 5th Racial Literacy Training Meeting was held this Friday (14) in Teresópolis, in the Serrana Region of Rio. The event took place at Unifeso (Centro Universitário Serra dos Órgãos) and brought together researchers, educators, students, public managers, representatives of black movements, communities and members of civil society to discuss issues related to racial equality. With the theme "The Erasure of the Black Presence in the Mountain Region", the meeting promoted debates on memory, anti-racist education, historical reparation, public policies, quilombola communities, ancestry and Afro-Brazilian heritage. According to the organizers, the proposal was to create a space for training and exchanging experiences capable of expanding the discussion about the presence and contribution of the black population in the historical, social and cultural construction of the region. ? The debate questioned the way in which the history of the region's municipalities is told and discussed which characters, communities and contributions end up being left out of official records or receive little visibility. For participants, recognizing the participation of the black population in the formation of municipalities is fundamental to understanding the social, economic and cultural construction of the region. The discussion also highlighted the importance of valuing the memory of black, quilombola and traditional communities, in addition to recognizing knowledge, cultural manifestations and trajectories that helped shape regional identity. The event brought together researchers, educators, black movements and public managers Disclosure Anti-racist education Anti-racist education was another central axis of the program. During the meeting, experts discussed teacher training and the application of Law No. 10,639/2003, which made the teaching of Afro-Brazilian History and Culture mandatory in schools. The participants defended the rapprochement between schools, universities, social movements and public managers to strengthen actions to combat racism and expand knowledge about the contribution of the black population to the formation of the country. The debates also addressed the relationship between memory preservation and historical reparation. According to the participants, recognizing the inequalities and contributions of the black population is an important step in the formulation of public policies aimed at promoting racial equality. Among the topics discussed were experiences of quilombola and traditional communities, preservation of Afro-Brazilian heritage, appreciation of ancestry and strategies for combating racism in the territories. The program also included discussions on actions to promote racial equality in areas such as education, culture, memory, territorial recognition and social participation. Exchange of experiences and upcoming editions In addition to the panels and discussion tables, the meeting featured conversation circles, cultural activities and moments of exchanging experiences between participants. The event was held by Aquilomba HUB and the Ministry of Racial Equality, through the Secretariat for Affirmative Action Policies and Combating and Overcoming Racism, in partnership with the Federal Institute of Goiás (IFG), the Tecnópolis Development Foundation (Funtec), the Instituto Usina Social (IUS) and institutions in the Mountain Region. Among the local partners were Unifeso, the Centro Cultural Feso Pro Arte and the Academia da Cultura Popular de Teresópolis. According to the organization, the project will have new editions in other regions of the state. The next cities confirmed to host the meeting are Campos dos Goytacazes and Cabo Frio. The expectation is to expand the initiative to municipalities in the North, Northwest, Lagos and Serrana regions, strengthening a network for discussion on memory, identity, historical reparation and public policies on racial equality.
