In the early hours of this Saturday, a storm with strong electrical activity surprised residents of several municipalities in Andalusia, mainly in the provinces of Granada, Málaga and Córdoba. Around 900 electrical discharges were recorded, and rain reached 25 liters per square meter.
According to the most recent data from the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), 25.4 liters per square meter were recorded in Benamejí, in Córdoba; 20.2 liters in Rincón de la Victoria, in Málaga; and 19.4 liters in Vélez-Málaga, also on the east coast.
Rainfall was also recorded in the city of Málaga, with 18.5 liters at the airport, and in points in the western region of the province, such as Marbella, where 17.8 liters were recorded.
During the phenomenon, around 900 lightning strikes hit the ground in the provinces of Granada, Málaga and Córdoba, an Aemet spokesperson in Málaga told EFE.
On social media, several videos are circulating showing the countless lightning strikes and flashes that lit up the skies during the early hours of the morning. In the same period, much of Andalusia also felt a magnitude 5 earthquake, with its epicenter in Granada, followed by 40 aftershocks.
