Ready since 2007, the guesthouse designed to integrate the complex created by Maroni never operated commercially. That same year, the establishment was closed by the city hall. Two years later, in 2009, the São Paulo Court ordered Maroni to demolish part of the building.
At the time, the Judiciary decided that the building measuring approximately 15,800 square meters received an irregular increase of approximately 255 square meters in area.
With the legal dispute dragging on for years, the building gained graffiti and a dilapidated appearance, while nearby blocks underwent an intense verticalization process. The only irregular construction on the planes' route is the hotel next to Bahamas, according to city hall.
When contacted by the reporter to comment on the situation of the building, in 2023, Maroni said that he would not demolish the property because the construction would meet the standards required by the Air Force. At the time, the body neither confirmed nor denied the statement, but highlighted that between the parameters of the aviation sector and those of the city hall, the most restrictive should prevail.
This Tuesday, the administration of Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) reaffirmed that the demolition request action is in the sentence compliance phase, as it had already said in 2023. This time, however, the administration added that, due to the death of the defendant, the municipality requested a subpoena from Maroni's estate to comply with the demolition order.
In just over three decades, the Bahamas has been in the news several times. It was sealed by city hall, hosted celebrities like Mike Tyson and had its license revoked. It was banned for six years, from 2007 to 2013.
In 2011, Maroni was arrested and convicted in the first instance - and later acquitted - for promoting prostitution and trafficking in women.
