SÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) - Musician Mike Browning, drummer and vocalist best known for his work in the bands Morbid Angel and Nocturnus, death metal pioneers, has died at the age of 62. The information was released last Monday, without details about the date and cause of death.

"Rest in peace Mike," Morbid Angel wrote on Instagram. "Thank you for helping make this all possible. Our condolences go out to your family and especially your daughter."

Born in May 1964, in Tampa, Florida, Browning began playing drums at age 13, a time when he listened to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. After being inspired by heavier bands such as Angel Witch, Slayer and Mercyful Fate, he became friends with guitarist Trey Azagthoth, with whom he formed Morbid Angel in 1983.

Over the following years, the two developed a sound that included macabre guitar riffs, accelerated drums and a dark aesthetic - what would become death metal, a subgenre of heavy metal. The band's first album, "Abominations of Desolation", featured Browning on lead vocals and drums.

The album was recorded in 1986, but released only in 1991, after the group became dissatisfied with the recordings and internal disagreements that culminated in a fight between Browning and Azagthoth. The drummer left Morbid Angel in the same year they recorded their first album.

Browning, who at that point was already playing with other bands, founded Nocturnus in 1987. In addition to the extreme metal he brought from the previous project, he also developed within the group his interest in themes and visuals linked to science fiction, enhancing the sound with synthesizers and approaching progressive rock.

Nocturnus released two albums with Browning, the most celebrated of which is the first of them, "The Key", from 1990. The album is still celebrated today and has become a classic of progressive death metal. Browning was fired from the band after the release of "Thresholds" two years later.

The musician continued playing in different groups and in 2013 re-formed Nocturnus, which had ended its activities in 2002. In its second incarnation, the band was renamed Nocturnus AD -from "after death", or after death- for contractual reasons and released two albums, "Paradox", in 2019, and "Unicursal", two years ago.
