José Gustavo Rabelo, 21, remained for days inside the same house where the body of his girlfriend, Joviana Evelyn Iankovski, 19, was located, according to the Civil Police. The student was found dead on Monday (10), in Sangão, in the south of Santa Catarina.

Delegate Murilo Silveira da Cunha, responsible for the investigation, stated that, after the death, the young man placed the body on the bed and kept the room closed during the weekend. The suspect's mother and grandmother also lived in the property, but did not realize what had happened.

According to the delegate, the room used to remain isolated because José Gustavo frequently received people in the room. This routine would have prevented family members from finding the locked door strange. They only found out about the death when the young man himself told them what had happened, on Monday morning.

The police are also investigating what the suspect did during the period he remained at the residence with the body. In testimony, he reported having ingested a large amount of controlled medication on Friday (7), which, according to his version, left him numb during the day.

Regarding the rest of the weekend, José Gustavo said he did not remember exactly what happened and reported heavy alcohol consumption, according to the investigation.

Discussion would have started after messages on the cell phone. The Civil Police are working with the version that Joviana died between Thursday night (6) and Friday morning (7). The couple allegedly argued after the student found messages from her boyfriend with other women on his cell phone.

According to the investigator's report to the police, Joviana tried to leave the residence during the argument. José Gustavo would have prevented her from leaving, followed the young woman and applied a blow known as a rear-naked choke. The suspicion is that she died from asphyxiation, although an examination by the Scientific Police has yet to officially determine the cause of death.

Messages raised suspicion of the mother

While Joviana was already dead, family members received messages attributed to the student saying that she would remain at her boyfriend's house during the weekend. The mother began to suspect that the texts were not being written by her daughter.

According to Livia Iankovski, Joviana's sister, the family received a message on Friday informing that the young woman had slept at her boyfriend's house and would remain there. On Sunday night, another message said that she would spend another night there and return home the next morning.

The Military Police were called on Monday and followed to the residence, in the Santa Apolônia neighborhood. The agents had to break down the bedroom door, which was locked, and found Joviana dead.

José Gustavo confessed to the crime, according to the police, and was arrested. The police chief reported that he had no criminal record or previous records of domestic violence, although family members told investigators that the couple's relationship was troubled.

Until the publication of the report that revealed the new details of the investigation, the suspect's defense had not been located to comment on the case.
