RIO DE JANEIRO, RJ (FOLHAPRESS) - Jockey Leandro Henrique, 27, died this Wednesday (19), three days after suffering a fall during a competition at the Jockey Club Brasileiro, in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro.

Leandro suffered an accident in the second race on Sunday (16). He was admitted to the Miguel Couto municipal hospital, in Gávea, next to the Jockey Club, with head trauma and trunk fractures.

The jockey was transferred to a private hospital and showed a subtle improvement in stimuli in the ICU (Intensive Therapy Center), but died in the early hours of the morning.

The Brazilian Jockey Club released a statement stating that Leandro "leaves a remarkable career in Brazilian racing and is deeply missed by family, friends, professionals and admirers of the sport."

A native of Pernambuco, Leandro started racing as a child, in Recife, and moved to Rio de Janeiro in 2016. During his career he reached podiums in important competitions. The main victory occurred at the Brazilian Grand Prix last year, with the horse Sinsel.

In 2022 Leandro had already suffered an accident, with a fractured rib and puncture in his hand, but managed to return to the track.

Haras Santa Maria de Araras, the team for which Leandro competed, said in a statement that the jockey was "an extraordinary professional, dedicated and talented, but, above all, a young man with an easy smile, beloved presence and a very special way of being among us".

"It is difficult to accept that such a young life, full of talent, dreams and future, was interrupted so soon," said the stud. Leandro leaves a daughter.
