Inmet issues gale warning for three Brazilian states

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a gale warning for areas of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo for this Friday (21). The warning is classified as “potential danger”, represented by the color yellow.

According to Inmet, the alert comes into effect at 12pm this Friday and continues until 11:59pm. During the period, winds can vary between 40 km/h and 60 km/h. The institute points out a low risk of tree branches falling due to gusts.

Among the regions included in the alert are the Vale do Paraíba Paulista and the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, in addition to the South, Center and North of Rio de Janeiro, Baixadas and the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro. In Espírito Santo, the warning reaches municipalities in the south of the state.

The list of affected municipalities includes cities such as Angra dos Reis, Araruama, Armação dos Búzios, Arraial do Cabo and Barra do Piraí, in Rio de Janeiro, as well as Arapeí and Bananal, in São Paulo. Other cities in the regions covered by the warning may also be affected.

Inmet advises the population to avoid risk areas

In case of gusts of wind, Inmet recommends that the population does not take shelter under trees, due to the risk of falls and electrical shocks.

Another guideline is to avoid parking vehicles near transmission towers and advertising signs, which can be affected by winds.

In emergency situations, the recommendation is to contact Civil Defense, by calling 199, or the Fire Department, by calling 193.
