In an interview with the podcast On Purpose with Jay Shetty, published in May, the actress stated that she was facing mental health problems, anxiety, postpartum depression, alcoholism and substance abuse when she decided to seek help and leave her daughter in the care of her father, former Ukrainian fighter Wladimir Klitschko.
Hayden rejected the idea that he would have simply "given up" his daughter and moved on with his own life. "The idea that anyone would think I would have just given my daughter away and been okay with it is heartbreaking and couldn't be further from the truth," he said.
According to the actress, she had reached a point where she needed to interrupt that cycle in order to recover. "I had to find a way to deal with it, even though I felt like I had completely lost myself," he said.
In the interview, Hayden also made a point of explaining that the search for treatment came from her. "The misconception that I went through forced treatment, when in reality, I was the person who resolved it, saying, 'I desperately need help, I know this is going to seem terrible, but I can't live like this anymore,'" he recalled.
In 2018, Kaya began living with her paternal family in Europe while the actress dedicated herself to recovery.
The report, however, took on different contours in an interview given by Hayden in 2022 to the Red Table Talk program. At the time, she said that the change of guard was "not entirely" her decision and said that she found out about the situation after Kaya was already in Ukraine. The actress said she understood Klitschko's position and described him as a "fantastic father", but said the situation had come as a shock to her.
Despite the distance, Hayden said he had a close relationship with his daughter. He said he traveled to meet her and kept in frequent contact via video calls.
