Green turtle stranded weakened on Ilha Comprida (SP) Social networks A green turtle (Chelonia mydas) was rescued weakened after stranding on the shore of Ilha Comprida, on the coast of São Paulo. The animal was sent for treatment at the Cananéia Research Institute (IPec). Residents found the turtle on the beach in the Pedrinhas neighborhood, last Sunday (5), and called the IPec teams to remove it. Green turtle In 2025, after 43 years, the green turtle left the list of endangered species. The International Union for Conservation of Nature classified it as "least concern". The species is the most common on the coast of São Paulo and, since 1982, has been among those threatened. Despite the improvement, experts warn that the recovery is fragile. Hunting, illegal trade, urban expansion and climate change remain the main risks. The green turtle can reach a shell of 1.5 meters, weigh more than 200 kilos and live for around 80 years.
