GUILHERME LUISSÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) - Birth and death intersect at the beginning of "Por Você", a soap opera that takes over the seven o'clock slot on TV Globo starting this Monday. The plot begins when doctor Bela, played by Sheron Menezzes, has to perform an emergency birth in a supermarket. The obstetrician was there by chance, shopping for her closest friend, nurse Juli.

But Juli will suffer a fatal accident and, before dying, she makes Bela swear that she will adopt her four children. In mourning, then, the protagonist is forced to give birth to a maternal side in herself that she never thought of accessing.

"For You" chronicles the many types of motherhood. There is Bela's battle against the guardianship council, which threatens to take away her children, but also that of the matriarch, who does not get along with the heiress, of the woman who is saddened by not getting pregnant, of another who can only get pregnant when she is older.

After "Coração Acelerado", with bad repercussions, the soap opera focuses on a plot about fraud in private hospitals. Vanessa, the fifth villain of Alinne Moraes' soap opera, is the heiress of Hospital e Maternidade Luz, currently run by her mother, Pérola, Renata Sorrah's character.

The two disagree about the direction of the institution. Pérola wants to invest in cancer research; Vanessa embezzles money into a luxury ward for elite pregnant women. Close to retiring, the mother doubts that her daughter is fit for the presidency.

More aligned with her goals is Bela, who aims to create a sector there for women in vulnerable situations – something that Vanessa despises. The two fight over this in the first chapter.

"Vanessa is racist, classist, a villain of our time. She cannot accept that the family gave space to the domestic worker's daughter. Her life was crossed by a black and peripheral girl, that is her speech", says author Juliana Peres, who writes the soap opera with Dino Cantelli, screenwriter of series such as "Deus Salve o Rei".

"Por Você" is reminiscent of a lighter, more Brazilian version of international medical series, such as HBO's "Grey's Anatomy" and "The Pitt", praised for the realism with which it portrays American emergency room duty. "Hospital is a very fertile arena for dramaturgy", says Peres, who worked with Manoel Carlos in "Viver a Vida" and "Em Família".

More or less like "The Pitt", "Por Você" must interrupt its main stories every now and then to show short plots of patients who are just passing through the hospital. With the ward for poor women, the authors promise to "realistically portray public health issues."

To give veracity to the medical scenes, Globo hired the consultancy of a psychiatrist and a gynecologist. Sheron Menezzes took classes and accompanied, with her private obstetrician, a public hospital shift, where she saw five births.

"I observed how they deal with pregnant women, with adversity. I noticed the nurses, the other doctors. It's very cool. I thought there was going to be a 'piripaque' seeing a cesarean section, but I thought it was beautiful", says the actress, who is now playing her second soap opera protagonist.

The first was three years ago, Sol de "Vai na Fé", also at seven. “Sol spoke a lot to women who are struggling to put food on the table,” says Menezzes. "With Bela, we put black women in another place – of success, of achievement, of purchasing power. It's one of the reasons that made me want to be here", says the actress, in a gap during the recordings.

"Por Você" is directed by André Câmara, who previously directed "Volta por Cima", also at seven, and "Amor Perfeito", at six. One of his wishes, he says, is to bring an aesthetic to each soap opera he directs. Now, in "Por Você", he was inspired by Andy Warhol's pop art. The objective is to use white backgrounds to highlight the colors of the characters.

Câmara repeats here a partnership with set designer Billy Nascimento, in charge of the art direction of "Por Você", hired to create a color palette for the soap opera that captures the audience's attention and leaves the "viewer more attentive and more eager to watch the soap opera", he says.

The concern makes sense, given that "Coração Acelerado", which ended last Friday (14), had poor ratings and made little noise on the networks. "For You" also runs a risk – with dozens of chapters already filmed, the soap opera could lose the chance to correct its course if something displeases the public. Câmara, the director, trusts that everything will go well. "If any route adjustment is necessary, there is time. This is already part of our grammar", he says.
