MPE requests challenge to Adjuto Afonso's candidacy: request is based on electoral donation The Public Electoral Ministry asked the Electoral Court to challenge the registration of candidacy for state deputy of the current president of the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam), Adjuto Afonso (União Brasil), in the 2026 elections. The request is based on a definitive conviction for electoral donation above the limit allowed by legislation. The action is being processed at the Regional Electoral Court of Amazonas (TRE-AM). In the 2020 elections, Adjuto Afonso donated R$75,000 to the campaign of his son Diego Afonso, then a candidate for councilor in Manaus. According to the Electoral Court, the parliamentarian could have donated up to R$57,306, an amount corresponding to 10% of the gross income declared by him in the year before the election. The donation, therefore, exceeded the legal limit by R$17,694. Because of the irregularity, Adjuto Afonso was sentenced to pay a fine of R$10,500. ? Afterwards, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) denied an appeal presented by the defense. The case became final and unappealable on March 10, 2025, when there was no longer any possibility of appeal. Rede Amazônica questioned Deputy Adjuto Afonso's advice, but received no response until the publication of this report. The Public Electoral Ministry bases the request on the Ineligibility Law. The legislation provides for an eight-year ban on individuals responsible for electoral donations considered illegal by a collegiate or final decision. The possible ineligibility, however, was not declared in the process that imposed the fine on the deputy. At the time, the Electoral Court determined that the existence or not of ineligibility should be analyzed in any future request for candidacy registration. It is this analysis that is taking place now. TRE-AM will decide whether the conviction for a donation above the legal limit prevents Adjuto Afonso from contesting the election.
