Images circulating on social media show Miguel Chagas da Silva, 75, pulling out a revolver and shooting at Eberton Silvestre Guimarães Barros, 41, known as "Tiquinho". The victim's son recorded the argument.
According to the Civil Police of Minas Gerais (PCMG), Eberton was rescued and taken to medical care, but he did not survive his injuries.
The 75-year-old man then got into a physical fight with the victim's 19-year-old son, who, "to suppress the unjust aggression, managed to take the suspect's gun, but he still continued to attack and, subsequently, the young man fired a firearm, hitting the elderly man who died at the scene", says the Civil Police.
The weapon used in the crime was handed over to the Military Police. The Civil Police say the young man was interviewed and released. A police investigation was launched and the case remains under investigation with the Inhapim Civil Police Station.
In a statement, lawyers Cairo Gianini Pires and Natália Maria de Souza, who represent the young man, say that "the conduct is supported by self-defense, in the face of unfair, current and concrete aggression."
"This is a tragic episode, which directly affected two families and which, certainly, none of them would want to be experiencing. Our client is a young, religious and deeply bereaved man, who found himself faced with an absolutely exceptional circumstance: he witnessed his own father being the victim of an unjust attack and, at the same time, he found himself in a concrete situation of risk to his own physical integrity, a circumstance that required an immediate reaction", says the defense.
