Last week, Discord stated that it invests in security. The platform added that the criminal activity surrounding the episode was coordinated and continued on other platforms after Discord banned the server where the girl was encouraged to harm herself. To the government, however, big tech admitted flaws in its monitoring system, as revealed by Estadão.
Contacted again this Monday, Discord did not respond to Estadão’s attempt to contact. The space remains open.
Last week, First Lady Rosângela da Silva, known as Janja, even called for the platform to be completely blocked, but the ANPD stated that only live broadcasts, such as the Go Live tool, are suspended.
According to the federal agency, the measure is preventive because, in meetings with the ANPD, Discord representatives did not demonstrate that they had sufficient protection and monitoring mechanisms, as provided for in the Digital Child and Adolescent Statute (ECA).
Reports increase
According to Safernet, a non-governmental organization that defends human rights on the internet, the number of complaints involving Discord increased by 54% from January to July this year, compared to the same period in 2025. In the first seven months of this year, 406 complaints were registered, compared to 264 in the same period last year. It is the highest monthly average in the entire historical series of the survey, which began in 2017.
According to Safernet, Discord is banned in Russia, Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Cambodia. In the case of Russia and Turkey, the countries blocked Discord in 2024 on charges of non-compliance with court orders to remove illegal content.
