Cyclone and cold front cause heavy rain and wind in regions of the country in the coming days

The formation of an extratropical cyclone and the advance of a cold front should cause an important change in the weather in central-southern Brazil in the coming days. Rio Grande do Sul will be one of the most affected areas, with forecasts of heavy rain, storms, hail and accumulations of up to 80 millimeters in some regions.

According to Climatempo, this Tuesday (18), a new area of low pressure forms near the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, while the cold front continues to act between Uruguay and the extreme south of Rio Grande do Sul. The scenario maintains conditions for moderate to heavy rain, isolated storms and high accumulations mainly in the south of the state.

The situation gains strength in the coming days. On Thursday (20), the cold front advances through the center-south and reinforces the instability in Rio Grande do Sul. Heavy rains, thunderstorms and the possibility of hail are expected, with volumes between 10 and 50 millimeters and accumulations that can reach 80 millimeters in the west and south of Rio Grande do Sul.

Instabilities are also advancing over Santa Catarina, especially from the west and south, while the west and southwest of Paraná enter the system's area of influence.

Cyclone advances to the high seas on Friday

On Friday (21), the extratropical cyclone moves to the high seas, while cold air gains space behind the cold front. As a result, the tendency is for the most intense instability in Rio Grande do Sul to reduce after the sequence of heavy rain and storms.

Even with the cyclone moving away, the effects of the passage of the frontal system continue to be felt. In Santa Catarina and Paraná, the increase in the pressure gradient favors strong winds, mainly in the east of the South Region.

There is still a possibility of rain in the north, east and coast of the region, in addition to points in the south of Rio Grande do Sul, the interior and south of Santa Catarina and south of Paraná, but with less intensity. Temperatures also drop in the three states.

Cold front brings gusts of up to 70 km/h to São Paulo

The effects of the system also reach the Southeast. After days of intense heat and low humidity, the approach of the cold front begins to cause changes in São Paulo on Thursday.

On Friday, the advance of the cold front breaks the hot and dry weather pattern and favors wind gusts approaching 70 km/h, especially in the center-east of São Paulo. Inland, the combination of very dry soil and strong winds increases the risk of dust rising and localized reduction in visibility.

The entry of polar air also causes a drop in temperatures. In the capital of São Paulo, the maximum, which can reach 32°C on Thursday, drops to 29°C on Friday. There is a chance of light, rapid rain overnight.

In Rio de Janeiro, Friday should still be hot, but the rain starts to arrive mainly at night along the Costa Verde, south of Rio de Janeiro, the Metropolitan Region and the Serrana Region. The south of Minas is also beginning to feel the increase in winds and the approach of the cold air mass.

Polar air advances through the Midwest and causes cold in the North

The polar air mass associated with the cold front also advances through the interior of the country. In Mato Grosso do Sul, temperatures begin to drop from Thursday. On Friday, cold air reaches the extreme south and southwest of Mato Grosso and reaches the extreme south of Goiás, reducing temperatures after several days of intense heat.

The continental advance of cold air reaches even further. On Thursday, the polar mass reaches Acre and southern Rondônia, changing the direction of the winds and dropping temperatures, characterizing an episode of cold weather.

While the center-south is going through this change, areas of the Center-West, interior of the Southeast, Northeast and part of the North continue to face heat and low humidity, with rates that can reach critical levels in some points and keep the risk of fires high.
