Climate monitoring: understand why Campinas will install 19 weather stations in schools

Meteorological Station installed in Campinas Fernando Suenaga/PMC The Civil Defense of Campinas (SP) is installing 19 meteorological stations in municipal schools to expand the monitoring of weather conditions and strengthen prevention in the face of extreme weather events. According to the municipal administration, these units are part of the expansion of the monitoring network and are in the validation phase. The first equipment was placed at the following points: Centro de Educação Infantil (CEI) Doutor Perseu Leite de Barros, in Vila Itapura; Emefeja Oziel Alves Pereira, in Parque Oziel; CEI Doutor Cláudio de Souza Novaes, in Jardim Florence 1. In total, considering those that will be placed in teaching units, there will be 21. Data from the meteorological station is linked to the Campinas Civil Defense system and the Center for Meteorological and Climate Research Applied to Agriculture (Cepagri) at Unicamp. How does the weather station work? Meteorological stations perform automatic measurements and transmit information to Civil Defense every five minutes. Among the data collected are: air temperature; relative air humidity; volume of rain; wind speed and direction; atmospheric pressure; solar radiation; concentration of carbon dioxide (CO?). Monitoring makes it possible to more accurately monitor weather conditions in different regions of the municipality and support the issuing of alerts to the population. According to the Department of Education, choosing to install it in teaching units allows children to learn new things about environmental education. Smarter monitoring In addition to expanding the station network, Civil Defense is developing projects that use artificial intelligence to integrate the information collected by the equipment with: meteorological radar data; lightning detection sensors; images from monitoring cameras. The City Hall states that the objective is to make alerts increasingly regionalized and allow for faster responses during storms, heat waves, droughts, floods and other extreme events. Part of the climate action package The implementation of the stations is part of the Campinas City Council's package of actions to combat climate extremes, aligned with the Local Climate Action Plan and the Local Resilience and Disaster Risk Reduction Plan. Among the planned measures are the expansion of meteorological monitoring, the strengthening of warning systems, training of the population and investment in technologies aimed at preventing and reducing disaster risks.
