Campinas records 2nd death from spotted fever in 2026

Spotted fever is mainly transmitted by the star tick. Jundiaí City Hall/Divulgação Campinas (SP) confirmed, this Tuesday (18), the second death from spotted fever in 2026. The victim is a 29-year-old man and the suspicion is that he became infected at a fishing spot in another city in the region, where the patient was on June 17, according to the city hall. The first symptoms appeared four days later, on June 21, according to the municipal administration. The man died on June 26, in a hospital in the municipality where the establishment is located. The Health Department reported that, although the contamination probably occurred outside of Campinas, Health Surveillance teams will reinforce guidance on the risks of the disease in fishing grounds that are close to the city limits. According to city hall, he died on April 21. In 2025, Campinas recorded six cases of the disease and all of them resulted in death. Period of greatest risk SYMPTOMS OF SPOTTED FEVER Spotted fever is a disease caused by the bacteria Rickettsia rickettsii, transmitted by the bite of an infected star tick. The Campinas region is considered endemic for the disease. According to the Department of Health, the municipality is in the period of greatest risk of transmission, which lasts until November. At this time, the younger stages of the star tick predominate, which have less selectivity in choosing hosts. Therefore, the recommendation is that residents and visitors take extra care in green areas, especially in places close to rivers, lakes and forests. In addition, people who have visited risk areas should seek medical attention immediately if they develop a fever. In addition to fever, the main symptoms of the disease are: Headache; Intense pain in the body; Malaise; Nausea; Vomiting. The incubation period varies from two to 14 days between the tick bite and the appearance of symptoms. How to prevent it The star tick is found mainly in lawns, forest areas and regions close to rivers, lakes and ponds. Among the measures recommended by the city hall are: Avoid walking, sitting or lying on the grass and in places with accumulation of leaves; Do not approach rivers, lakes and wild animals present in these areas; Give preference to paved areas for leisure and physical activities; Wear light-colored clothing that covers the body; Inspect the body and clothes after passing through risk areas; Remove ticks from the skin carefully, using tweezers and without crushing them; Take a shower and observe your body after visiting green areas; Seek medical attention if symptoms appear within 14 days of exposure.
