The agency reinforced that crocodiles should not be fed, approached, touched, provoked or encouraged to interact with people. Environmentalist and crocodile expert Marisa Tellez explained that feeding the reptiles made them start to associate human beings with food.
Tellez also stated that the tourists did not adopt the correct behavior when approaching the animal. The recommendation is to remain calm, do not hit the water and continue towards the shore without turning your back on the crocodile.
Authorities also recommend that tourists avoid swimming at night, a period when animals tend to hunt.
Attack this year
In April, an American tourist was injured after being attacked by a crocodile on Caye Caulker. According to the Breaking Belize News website, Nicole Elizabeth Robinson, a 44-year-old businesswoman, entered the water at around 3:30 am accompanied by friends.
The animal took advantage of the darkness to attack her. Nicole suffered serious bites to her left wrist and her right elbow was lacerated. Even though he was bleeding a lot, he managed to escape the crocodile's claws.
