Barcelona agrees with Rodri for up to €75 million, says newspaper

The transfer has not yet been officially announced by Barcelona or Manchester City. According to the Spanish publication, there remain bureaucratic steps, such as drafting and signing contracts, in addition to the player's medical examinations. If there are no unforeseen events, Rodri will be a player for the Catalan club in the 2026/27 season.

The information is also shared by other European vehicles. Reuters reported that Manchester City had accepted an offer equivalent to £65.4 million for the midfielder and that Rodri had agreed a four-year contract with the reigning Spanish champions.

El País points to a composition of 60 million fixed euros plus bonuses capable of increasing the negotiation to 75 million euros. Cadena SER also reports a principle of agreement and states that documents are already being exchanged between the two clubs.

Rodri chose Barcelona after interest from Real Madrid

Negotiations progressed after Rodri expressed his desire to return to Spanish football. According to Marca, the midfielder refused an attack from Real Madrid and indicated to Manchester City that his preference was to defend Barcelona.

From then on, the Catalans began a sequence of proposals. The Spanish newspaper claims the first offer was €45 million plus variables, while City initially intended to receive up to €90 million. As talks progressed, the parties reduced the difference until reaching an agreement of 75 million between fixed amounts and bonuses.

Rodri only had one year left on his contract at Manchester City. The English club intended to renew the contract, but the player's desire to return to Spain weighed on the negotiations.

Barcelona should sign Rodri four-year contract

The agreement provides for a four-season contract. This way, the Spaniard would remain at Barcelona until 2030. The expectation is that the midfielder will travel to complete the medical examinations and sign the contract before being officially presented.

Rodri's arrival represents a major reinforcement for coach Hansi Flick's midfield. Winner of the 2024 Ballon d'Or, the player was also one of the protagonists of the Spanish team in winning the 2026 World Cup.

Barcelona's interest increased given the need to reinforce the sector after Frenkie de Jong's injury. According to El País, signing the midfielder was not initially part of the club's priorities for this window, but the scenario changed with the Dutchman's absence and the possibility of bringing Rodri back to Spain.

Rodri leaves Manchester City after seven seasons

Rodri arrived at Manchester City in 2019, signed from Atlético de Madrid. Since then, he has become one of the team's most important players and built a career marked by titles and protagonism in midfield.

In seven seasons, the Spaniard played 298 matches and won 12 major titles, including four editions of the Premier League, two FA Cups, three League Cups and the Champions League. He scored the winning goal against Inter Milan in the 2023 Champions League final, which guaranteed City its first European title in its history.

The midfielder also went through difficult periods due to injuries. He recently underwent minor back surgery and had returned to training. He did not take part in Manchester City's 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield.
