The estimate was given by Tarciana Medeiros, president of Banco do Brasil, when commenting on the balance sheet for the second quarter of this year. Despite a higher-than-expected profit of R$3.9 billion, agribusiness defaults still weighed against the results.
"Our new potential portfolio for inclusion in the MP is up to R$100 billion, with up to 113 thousand customers, including defaulters and those with extended or renegotiated non-performing operations", stated Tarciana.
According to the bank's calculations, every R$1 billion renegotiated in this program can generate a result of up to R$200 million in the bank's profit.
BB executives are optimistic about the recovery from defaults in the sector, although El Niño could affect producers this year and next.
In addition to renegotiations, the state-owned company has made new loans with more guarantees. Another point is financing irrigation in areas that generally face drought due to the climate phenomenon, such as the Central-West.
"In 2026 alone we have already judicialized R$ 15.5 billion, a volume that already exceeds the entire amount we made in 2025. In this process, we began the repossession of more than 130 rural properties", stated Tarciana.
In addition to MP 1,376/2026, whose ordinance should be published in the coming days, the bank also renegotiates rural credits through MP 1,314, called BB Regulariza Agro. In this initiative, R$ 39.341 billion in loans were received. According to the bank, the majority of customers in difficulty are tenants, which facilitates the resumption of production, without affecting the performance of agribusiness. Also according to BB, the property taken back by the institution will return to production in the following harvest, that is, within three years.
In June, credit to agribusiness reached a balance of R$421.6 billion, an annual increase of 0.8%. The majority of new hires were made through fiduciary transfers, says the bank, reaching 70% in Harvest 25/26.
The sector has been experiencing a wave of judicial recoveries since 2024, following grain harvest failures in some regions. In the summer of that year, producers in the Center-North, Southeast and part of Paraná experienced a prolonged drought, given the impact of the last El Niño.
Defaults from these customers stood at 6.27% in June, an increase of 3.11 percentage points in the year and 0.05 percentage points in the quarter, a slowdown in relation to previous balances. New delays fell from 1.77% to 1.37%.
