Left-back Léo Derik, from Athletico-PR, was sentenced in the first instance to 13 years in prison, initially closed, for two crimes of rape. The decision was handed down by the 2nd Court of Domestic and Family Violence against Women in Curitiba. The player may appeal freely.

The process is being carried out in secret from the courts. According to information released by the press after access to the sentence, the episodes analyzed by the Court took place in Curitiba, between December 2023 and February 2024. The woman was in a relationship with the athlete at the time of the events.

Léo Derik denies having committed the crimes. In testimony, the player stated that the relationships were consensual and disputed the accusations of violence. The defense announced that it will appeal the conviction to the Court of Justice of Paraná (TJPR) and highlighted that the sentence is not yet definitive.

Court set a sentence of 13 years and compensation

The sentence established a sentence of six years and six months in prison for each of the two crimes, totaling 13 years in prison. The full-back was also ordered to pay R$20,000 in minimum compensation for moral damages to the victim.

When justifying the conviction, the judge responsible for the case considered the report presented by the woman to be consistent and understood that the testimony, analyzed together with the other elements gathered in the process, was sufficient to prove the crimes.

The Public Prosecutor's Office had asked for the player's acquittal because they considered that there was not enough evidence to support a conviction. The judge, however, adopted a different understanding when evaluating the body of evidence.

Léo Derik was also responsible for psychological violence, but was acquitted of that charge. The Court understood that the facts highlighted in this section of the complaint were related to the same conduct analyzed in the rape crimes.

Defense says it will appeal

The athlete's lawyers stated that they received the decision with surprise and announced that they will file an appeal. The defense reinforced that the player has maintained since the beginning of the process that the acts were consensual and asked that the presumption of innocence be respected while there is the possibility of appeal.

The court allowed Léo Derik to respond freely during this stage of the process. According to the decision, the necessary requirements for the decree of preventive detention have not been identified at this time.

Athletico-PR speaks out about conviction

After the case was released, Athletico-PR reported that it had become aware of the court decision and stated that it would not comment on the content of the process due to judicial secrecy.

"Athletico Paranaense was made aware of the court decision involving the athlete Léo Derik. As it is a process that is being processed in secret from the courts, the club will not comment on its content or the facts discussed in it", informed the team.

The club also highlighted that the conviction occurred in the first instance and can still be challenged.

"The decision is of the first instance and is subject to appeal. The Club is not taking part in the process and will respect its regular progress, observing the applicable legal guarantees until an eventual final and unappealable decision", he added.

Léo Derik is 21 years old and is part of the Athletico-PR professional squad. In the 2026 season, the full-back has already played matches for the club in national competitions.
