At 80 years old, Alice Ruiz honors the UBC Traditions award for her poetic contribution as a lyricist to Brazilian music

Alice Ruiz is the artist honored in the sixth edition of the Tradições UBC trophy Cristhian Franz Tragni / Disclosure ? ANALYSIS ? It is possible that many followers of Adriana Calcanhotto, Arnaldo Antunes, Cássia Eller (1962 – 2001), Gal Costa (1945 – 2022) and Ney Matogrosso, among other singers, have never noticed Alice's name Ruiz in the credits of songs recorded by these artists. “Socorro”, for example, a song released by Cássia in 1994 and re-recorded by Arnaldo in 1998 and by Gal in 2002 (with great success), is a partnership between Arnaldo Antunes and Alice Ruiz. Also a partner of Itamar Assumpção (1949 – 2003) – with whom she composed “Milágrimas” (1993) and “Vou taking you from the dictionary” (1993), among around 20 other songs – and Zeca Baleiro, with whom she created “Almost nothing” (2000) and “O amor que merit” (2003), Alice Ruiz is a poet who has written and published verses at the service of Brazilian music in a trajectory that has already added up more than five decades and encompasses the spread of haiku. For this reason, at the age of 80, completed on January 22nd, the poet, lyricist, publicist and translator from Curitiba is worthy of the Tradições UBC award, an honor that will be granted to her by the Brazilian Union of Composers next Wednesday, August 26th, at Casa de Francisca, in São Paulo (SP). On the occasion, in addition to the award ceremony, there will be a pocket show with musical direction by guitarist Gustavo Ruiz and with a script made up of songs from the songbook by Alice Ruiz, also a partner of Alzira E, Ceumar, Chico César, Iara Rennó and José Miguel Wisnik. The awards ceremony for the sixth edition of Tradições UBC will be broadcast live on the UBC YouTube channel, to the delight of the honored artist. "I'm going to spread the news as much as possible about this recognition that UBC offers me through this trophy because, the way music is being publicized, especially after the advent of streaming, the lyricist has become a ghost. And, if it's a woman, the invisibility is even greater. That's why I, as a woman and a lyricist, cheer and celebrate upon receiving this honor", celebrates Alice Ruiz. With the ability to see poetry in everyday life and to transform words into song verses, in a trajectory in which poetry has always gone hand in hand with music, the composer joins a female team formed by Alaíde Costa, Anastácia, Dona Onete, Lia de Itamaracá and Rosa Passos – artists who have already won the Tradições UBC trophy in the five previous editions of the event.
