Amazonas has 38 schools above the national average in Ideb, but has the worst performance in secondary education in the country

In 2025, Amazonas achieved 3.8 points in the Ideb high school assessment and tied with Roraima in the last position in the ranking, while the national average was 4.5. Data from Ideb and the Basic Education Assessment System (Saeb), for last year, were released at the beginning of August by the Ministry of Education (MEC). The index combines students' performance in Portuguese Language and Mathematics, measured by Saeb, with school approval rates. Among the schools with the highest scores in Amazonas, two achieved 6.0 points: Escola Estadual Professora Jacimar da Silva Gama and EETI Marcantonio Vilaça II, both in Manaus. The Federal Institute of Amazonas (IFAM) – Advanced Campus Manacapuru recorded 5.7 points, followed by the Maria Amélia do Espírito Santo State School, with 5.5. ? The Lucas Pena State School, in Boca do Acre; the Marcantonio Vilaça State School and the Áurea Pinheiro Braga State School, in Manaus; and Colégio Nossa Senhora do Carmo, in Parintins, are among the units that surpassed the national average. Amazonas has an IDEB below the national average. The survey also shows schools with grades below 2.0 points in the state. The four lowest scores in the list are from the Boca do Acre Indigenous Education Center, with 2.2; Eirunepé Indigenous Education Center, with 2.0; Uarini Indigenous Education Center, with 1.9; and Sagrada Família State School, in São Gabriel da Cachoeira, with 0.8. The Saeb results, released by the MEC on the same day, also point to difficulties faced by Amazonas students in understanding more complex texts and solving mathematics problems involving percentages, functions and proportionality. Saeb is applied every two years to evaluate the performance of basic education students. The assessment results are used to calculate the Ideb along with the schools' approval rates. g1 contacted the Government of Amazonas and the State Department of Education and Sports (Seduc-AM) to find out their position on the Saeb results and the difficulties identified in student learning, but until the last update of this report, there was no response. Education situation in Amazonas Ideb data reveals that advances have not yet been sufficient for Amazonas to surpass the national average in the three main indicators: initial years of Elementary School; final years of Elementary School; and High School. In the initial years of Elementary School, which corresponds to students from the 1st to the 5th year, Amazonas reached 6 points, while the national average was 6.3 points. The result placed the state in 17th place, tied with Pernambuco. In the final years of Elementary Education, which evaluates students from the 6th to the 9th year, the state's performance was 4.9 points. In this regard, the national average was 5.3. With the score, Amazonas is behind 15 states in the federation, tied with Acre, Paraíba and Tocantins. The most critical point for Amazonas was the assessment of secondary education. The state appears in last place, tied with Roraima, with 3.8 points. The national average was 4.5 points. The worst index recorded among the states of Brazil occurs in a context of investigation into the situation in education in Amazonas. In June this year, Rede Amazônica revealed that an inspection by the Amazonas Court of Auditors (TCE-AM) found a set of irregularities that resulted in a R$1.117 billion loss to public coffers. The value brings together divergences found in contracts, payments, absence of tons of food in stock for school lunches, school transport and other department services, during the administration of then governor Wilson Lima (União Brasil). The information is contained in a report from the Directorate of External Control of Direct State Administration (Dicad), signed on June 12, 2026. The document is the result of an inspection carried out by the TCE after Amazonas recorded the worst performance among the 27 Brazilian states in the average grades of the National High School Exam (Enem). In school transport, the report cites inspections carried out in the municipality of Manacapuru, where vehicles were identified with a period of use longer than expected in the contracts and differences between the capacity of the buses and the number of students transported.
