The man, a 33-year-old North American missionary, confessed to the crime and has been in prison since Sunday (5). The attacker himself took the boy to Viamão hospital on Sunday. Upon noticing the multiple injuries, the medical team called the 18th Military Police Battalion (BPM). The American was arrested red-handed at the hospital. On Monday (6), during a custody hearing, the court converted the act into preventive detention. Due to the severity of his injuries, the boy was transferred to the capital. The Civil Police reported that there are records in at least two other Brazilian states that indicate that three of the couple's other children, aged 5, 7 and 9, were also victims of similar attacks. The situation of a one-year-old baby is still being investigated and, so far, there is no confirmation that he has suffered violence. As determined by the Guardianship Council, the couple's five children were sent to institutional care.
