Ceuma University holds X Environment Forum; see schedule

Ceuma University will hold, from Wednesday (19) to Friday (21), in São Luís, the 10th edition of the Environment Forum. This year, the meeting has the theme “Planetary Health, Future of the Amazon” and brings together researchers, professors, professionals and representatives from different sectors to discuss the effects of environmental transformations on human health and the paths to sustainable development in the Amazon region. Promoted by Ceuma's Postgraduate Program in the Environment (PPGMA), the forum also marks ten years of consolidation of the program. Over the three days, the program will feature lectures, debates, workshops and collaborative activities focused on topics such as public health, climate change, sanitation, pollution, food security and environmental education. The proposal is to bring together different areas of knowledge around a debate that has gained ground inside and outside universities: the so-called planetary health, an approach that directly relates the health of populations to the conditions of ecosystems and the changes caused by human action in the environment. In addition to the academic community, the event aims to expand dialogue with representatives of public authorities, companies and civil society, especially given the challenges faced by the Amazon and the populations living in the region. Researcher from the United States opens the program One of the main highlights of this edition is the participation of professor Bree Hemingway, from Claremont Graduate University, in the United States. The researcher will give the opening lecture “Where life is born: Amazon One Health”, which can be translated as “Where life is born: One Health in the Amazon”. The presentation is scheduled for Wednesday (19), from 7pm to 8pm, at the Expedito Bacelar Auditorium, at Ceuma University. Bree Hemingway works in the areas of community health and global health and is the associate director of the Master of Public Health (MPH) program, as well as co-director of an integrated training program in the medical and public health fields. Forum follows objectives of Agenda 2030 According to the organization, the programming was structured based on some of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations (UN). Among the prioritized axes are SDG 1, related to the eradication of poverty; SDG 3, on health and well-being; SDG 6, which deals with drinking water and sanitation; and SDG 13, aimed at tackling climate change. The choice of themes seeks to relate environmental issues to social and public health problems, showing how factors such as access to water, sanitation, food and environmental conditions are part of the same discussion. Partnership with Caema In this edition, the forum also has a partnership with the Maranhão Environmental Sanitation Company (Caema). The company's participation aims to bring academic debate closer to experiences related to public management, sanitation and environmental education in the state. According to the proposal presented by the organization, the partnership is also linked to the discussions foreseen in the Maranhão 2050 Plan and the 2030 Agenda, which brings together international sustainable development goals. The intention is to expand the exchange of experiences between universities and public authorities and discuss solutions that can be applied beyond the academic environment. Ten years of debates on the environment The holding of the 10th edition also represents a milestone for the Postgraduate Program in Environment at Ceuma University. Upon reaching a decade of activities, the forum expands an agenda that involves scientific research, academic training and discussion of environmental problems with a direct impact on the population. The 2026 edition focuses mainly on the integration between health and the environment, placing the Amazon at the center of debates ranging from the effects of climate change to sanitation, food security and the exposure of populations to pollution. The proposal is to bring together different perspectives to discuss not only environmental conservation, but also how changes in ecosystems can influence the quality of life, health and future of Amazonian communities.
