Earthquakes hit Granada, Spain, leaving injuries and damage; VIDEO

According to the country's National Geographic Institute, all of them had a magnitude greater than 4 and the largest of them - 4.7 - occurred at 10:37 am local time - 5:37 am Brasília time - and had its epicenter in the city of Gójar, 10 km south of Granada. At least three people suffered minor injuries, Andalusia regional official Antonio Sanz told reporters, adding that one of them, a minor, was taken to hospital. In a statement, the Granada provincial administration announced the closure of administrative buildings, museums and sports facilities due to the tremors. Tourist access to the Alhambra medieval complex, a famous tourist attraction in the city, has been restricted. Some buildings, mainly residential, suffered damage from the tremors, with large cracks visible in the walls, parts of some facades displaced and bricks scattered across the sidewalks. Granada's metro system said on social media platform X that it was reducing the speed of its trains to 30 km/h as a precautionary measure, and local media showed several hotels being evacuated. Saturday's earthquake The magnitude 5 earthquake that hit Granada on Saturday also occurred in the early hours of the morning, shortly after 1 am local time. The regional government reported that homes and cars were damaged, but there were no reports of injuries. Spanish television channel TVE showed debris scattered across the street and some damaged cars in the popular tourist town. Andalusian emergency services rescued several people from damaged buildings. The vice-president of the Andalusian regional government, Antonio Sanz Cabello, said authorities had declared a state of emergency. "If you are in Granada, you felt the earthquake, you are fine and your home is undamaged, remain calm and avoid entering and leaving buildings unnecessarily. On the street, stay away from facades, eaves, balconies, walls and other elements that could fall", he advised in a post on the social network X.
