Many of them are produced with vinyl canvas, a material that contains plastics and chemical substances, which can take hundreds of years to decompose in nature. In Boituva (SP), banners that would have been discarded gained a new function: they became reusable bags for selective collection. The project came from the Federal Institute of Boituva (IFSP), which found a sustainable alternative to avoid this disposal. ? The pieces were distributed free of charge to residents of two condominiums in the city. Selective collection is already part of systems analyst Dafne Marques' routine. Twice a week, she separates the recyclables and puts the materials in the bag produced with the banners. "When they came up with the idea of ??the green bag, it made the process we already had at home even easier. I thought the idea was very necessary", he says. The idea came about after students from the Federal Institute carried out a study with the Collectors Cooperative and identified the need for more resistant packaging to store recyclables. According to the director of the IFSP of Boituva, Felipe de Almeida, the project also solved a problem that existed within the institution itself. "The project was born because we had several banners here that were piling up showing students' work. And then they didn't know what to do with it", he explains. Once ready, they return to Boituva and are delivered free of charge to residents. Since the beginning of the project, more than 110 tons of recyclable materials have been collected in the municipality. The initiative also gained recognition outside the city. At the end of 2025, the project was presented at COP30, in Belém (PA), a world conference on climate. The proposal was also awarded in a national education competition focused on the green economy, taking team members to Germany. The next step is to expand the initiative and transform the project into a model that can be applied throughout the city and, in the future, in other municipalities in the country. On a 1,800-hectare farm, around 500 hectares were destined for reforestation. Since 2005, more than 300 thousand seedlings have been planted. Before work began, a vegetation study was carried out to identify the native species most suitable for the region. Among the trees found today are paineiras, embaúbas and jacarandas. With the growth of vegetation, areas that were previously degraded began to once again offer shelter and food for fauna. "The place has come back to life. Many animals have reappeared because it is their habitat. We have already seen jaguars and maned wolves roaming around here", says environmental inspector Anderson Dionisio Alves.
