80-year-old samaúma is listed as a heritage site in Macapá

Samaúma over 80 years old, symbol of the MP-AP Mariana Ferreira/g1 The Samaúma over 80 years old, located in front of the Attorney General's Office, in the Araxá neighborhood, in the South Zone of Macapá, was listed by the Amapá government on July 8. The decree responds to the request of the State Public Ministry (MP-AP). The Public Ministry considers the tree to be a symbol of its history and policies to protect society and the environment. The objective is to preserve the Amazon flora. The decree prohibits suppression, exploitation, abusive pruning, transplanting or any intervention without authorization that compromises the health of the tree. According to Attorney General Alexandre Monteiro, the MP already took care of the tree, but now, with the decree, the responsibility is greater. "The Public Prosecutor's Office looks up to this tree to be the guardian of the population's rights and the State's assets. We already took care of it, but now we have a legal obligation to protect it with even more care", said Monteiro. When the Prosecutor's Office land was purchased, the tree was already there. Since then, the MP has taken care of the tree. Today, in addition to its symbolism, it gives its name to the square in front of the organ. "The land was purchased in 2005 and, in 2013, we opened Praça da Samaúma. The tree is large, with deep roots, and represents an environmental asset of extreme relevance, offering protection to the species and the surrounding ecosystem", said Monteiro. With more than 80 years, Samaúma has accompanied several transformations in Amapá. It had existed since the period of the old territory. Today, due to the weather, Samaúma has dry leaves and is awaiting its flowering period in the coming months. The tree also gives its name to the traditional Luau da Samaúma, an MP event that brings together gastronomy and culture around the plant.
