Stable flies advance in winter and cause damage to livestock farmers in the interior of SP Nosso Campo The winter period, characterized by the sugarcane harvest, is now marked by the constant appearance of stable flies. The insects, attracted by the concentration of vinasse and humidity, settle on the cattle and interfere with the cattle's routine. Instead of using the time for feeding and resting, the cows remain standing, spasming and in discomfort. They prioritize spending energy to protect themselves from flies, which keeps them weak and weakened. This affects their weight gain, milk production and quality of life, and can cause the death of cattle. In Avanhandava (SP), in the center-west of São Paulo, cattle farmer Alexander von Büldring lost eight head of cattle and had a 60% reduction in milk production. Alexander reports the diagnosis of parasitic sadness complex after the animals demonstrated fatigue, discomfort and the presence of blood in their urine and feces. Of the 36 animals on the property, 16 are milking, each producing six liters of milk. Near the property, a sugar and ethanol plant encourages the presence of flies, due to the high amount of vinasse and organic matter. In a note, the Diana Bioenergia plant shared measures taken to combat stable flies, such as preventing leaks, monitoring the fly population, specialized consultancy in pest management and adjustments in straw management, the application of organic compounds and the distribution of vinasse. Another property facing the same problem has resorted to using mechanical ventilation to reduce the impact of flies on the 110 head of cattle. Cattle rancher João Heck Junior observes the animals' constant weight loss and reports the loss of some cows. Veterinarian Luís Felipe Cruiol reports that the insects have adapted to winter periods. With the arrival of the sugarcane sector and the promotion of fly reproduction, cattle become vulnerable. According to the veterinarian, reinforcing stable hygiene, raking feces and avoiding humidity are measures that can help the cattle's quality of life during this period.
