The move is part of the overhaul that began after the end of Pep Guardiola's time at the Etihad Stadium. The Spaniard left command of the team after ten seasons and was replaced by Enzo Maresca, who signed a three-year contract. Bernardo Silva also ended his career at City at the end of his contract and signed a contract with Real Madrid.
Now, the board's focus is on reorganizing the midfield. City have already invested heavily to sign 23-year-old Elliot Anderson. The agreement with Nottingham Forest was made official in July, and the Englishman signed for five seasons. The operation could reach 130 million pounds, although the fixed amount disclosed in different sources is 116 million pounds.
Manchester City targets Enzo Fernández
Enzo Fernández appears as the next big target. The 25-year-old Argentine has been monitored by Manchester City for some time and is back on the radar due to the possibility of Rodri leaving the club.
Chelsea, however, does not intend to facilitate a negotiation. According to The Guardian, the London club set a price of 120 million pounds to release the midfielder and gave interested parties until 5pm on Friday (14th), British time, to submit a proposal. After this period, the intention is to keep the player on the squad.
Enzo arrived at Chelsea in January 2023, after standing out for Benfica and winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina. At the time, the English paid around 121 million euros for the transfer, in one of the biggest operations in the history of British football.
Last season also had troubled episodes for the Argentine. In April, he was sidelined for two games after public statements about his own future. Enzo had been wearing the armband in the absence of Reece James, but lost space in the lead during the episode.
Even so, Chelsea's new coach, Xabi Alonso, considers the player part of his plans for 2026/27.
Barcelona try to sign Rodri
City's pursuit of Enzo Fernández comes as Rodri approaches a possible exit. Barcelona have already presented two proposals for the Spanish midfielder, but both were rejected.
The first offer was approximately 45 million euros. Afterwards, the Catalan club increased the investment to around 60 million euros, a figure that also did not convince the English board.
Manchester City is asking for between 60 million and 65 million pounds to negotiate Rodri, the equivalent of approximately 70 million to 76 million euros. The 30-year-old midfielder welcomes a transfer to Barcelona, ??but the parties still need to reach a financial agreement.
The eventual sale would open up space in the squad and help finance an attempt to sign Enzo Fernández.
Reijnders negotiates exit to Saudi Arabia
Another player who could leave the Etihad Stadium is Tijjani Reijnders. Manchester City is in advanced negotiations with Al-Qadisiyah to sell the Dutchman, signed from Milan in June 2025.
The conversations revolve around an operation worth approximately 60 million euros. Reijnders has a contract with City until June 2030, but could end his time in England after just one season.
If Rodri and Reijnders are traded, Manchester City will have the financial margin and space in the squad to move on to another midfielder. At the moment, Enzo Fernández occupies a prominent position on the list of possible reinforcements, although the price set by Chelsea makes the operation one of the most expensive in this transfer window.
