The area is about 27 kilometers from Manaus. The fire started on Thursday afternoon (13) and, as of early Friday afternoon (14), it had still not been controlled. The smoke also reaches properties close to the dump, where, according to residents, elderly people live. The fine occurred during an inspection carried out by the agency's team at the site, one day after a fire hit the area. The assessment was based, among other regulations, on Federal Law No. 12,305/2010, which establishes the National Solid Waste Policy, and Federal Law No. 9,605/1998, the Environmental Crimes Law. Iranduba City Hall has 20 days to pay the fine, present an administrative defense or express interest in conciliation with the environmental agency. "During the inspection, the team discovered the burning of waste in the open, a practice prohibited by environmental legislation. Based on this finding, the Institute adopted the planned administrative measures and will continue to monitor compliance with environmental obligations related to the area", stated the director-president of Ipaam, Gustavo Picanço. In 2023, the institute notified City Hall to adopt measures to adapt and remediate the site, in addition to improvements in solid waste management. As the determinations were not fully complied with, the municipality received, in 2024, a fine of R$500,000. In 2026, a new inspection identified other irregularities. Ipaam ordered the City Hall to present an action plan to remediate the area and imposed a new fine, this time of R$1.5 million, for repeat offenses. During an inspection carried out in March this year, technicians found that the site continued to function as an open dump. According to the report, waste was deposited directly on the ground, without adequate coverage and without environmental control structures. The inspection also recorded piles of waste over four meters high, in addition to the accumulation and drainage of leachate and the absence of systems for drainage and capture of gases. The area is monitored by the Federal Court. The dump is also monitored by the Federal Court. In July this year, a court decision determined that the Municipality of Iranduba must prove compliance with obligations related to the recovery of the area. In the process, a new technical inspection by Ipaam was also planned to update information on the site's recovery and environmental licensing.
