According to the agency, Reis entered the US in June 2024. He came on the immigration agency's radar after being detained for driving without a license in May, in Southborough, in the state of Massachusetts; his arrest took place this month, in the same state. He will remain in jail until he is deported, according to ICE.
Reis has an open arrest warrant with a sentence of 14 years and 3 months in prison, in a closed regime.
Contacted for questions regarding the Brazilian, his conviction and possible contacts with foreign authorities regarding the case, the Court of Justice of Minas Gerais forwarded a decision from the 2nd Criminal Court of the District of Governador Valadares in which judge David Miranda Barroso "expresses interest" in the inclusion of the warrant in the Interpol system, the international police cooperation organization.
The court's office, however, states that the case has not become final (it has not exhausted all appeals), and classified Reis, in response to questions, as a defendant. Folha was unable to identify whether Reis has a lawyer.
According to the G1 portal, Reis was convicted of the death of Juliano Schubert Teixeira in February 2010, in Governador Valadares. The crime would have been motivated by a dispute related to drug trafficking.
ANOTHER BRAZILIAN DETAINED BY ICE
In another operation in Massachusetts, the American immigration agency arrested Brazilian Heriton da Silva Aredes, who was also illegally staying in the USA.
According to ICE, he had already been deported in 2008, following a court order of removal, but re-entered the country illegally.
The agency further states that Aredes was detained and released by police on three separate occasions on charges including assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, driving without a license and refusing to identify himself when approached.
ICE states that the Brazilian will remain in the agency's custody and will have access to due process. Folha de S.Paulo did not find Aredes' defense.
