To donate, you must be between 16 and 69 years old, weigh more than 50 kilos and be in good health. People between 60 and 69 years old can donate, as long as the first donation was made before the age of 60. Minors under 18 require authorization from a guardian. It is also necessary to present an original, valid, official identification document with photo. There is no need to be fasting. The guideline is to be fed and avoid fatty foods in the three hours before donating. The Ministry of Health also recommends having slept at least six hours in the last 24 hours. One donation can benefit up to four people. The importance of mobilization goes beyond immediate care at blood centers. Blood is used in emergency situations, surgeries, transplants, oncology treatments and in the care of patients who need transfusions. After collection, the bag is separated into different components, such as red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Therefore, a single donation can benefit up to four people. In Brazil, around 1.6% of the population donated blood through the Unified Health System in 2024. That year, more than 3.3 million bags were collected in the country. Even with this number, the Ministry of Health reinforces the importance of regular donations to keep stocks at safe levels. Data from the Ministry of Health also shows that the country recorded 3.31 million bags collected in 2024, compared to 3.25 million in 2023. By May 2025, more than 830 thousand bags had already been collected in the country. The guideline is that anyone who is able to take advantage of this Saturday's action and make a donation. Blood cannot be produced artificially and depends on the solidarity of donors to reach those in need.
