According to Common Sense Media, the system failed to identify serious signs of emotional distress and responded inappropriately to content related to suicide, psychosis, mania, eating disorders and marijuana use.
In its conclusions, the organization stated that Google's artificial intelligence did not meet seven of the eight principles considered essential to guarantee the safety of children and adolescents. Therefore, it classified the tool as an “unacceptable risk” for this audience.
Google challenged the research methodology. In a note sent to PBS, the company stated that the study used a limited set of ambiguous and artificial questions, which would not represent the way people use search on a daily basis.
The company also stated that artificial intelligence resources can help children and teenagers learn, explore topics and understand information.
