According to the meteorologist at the Center for Meteorological and Climatic Research Applied to Agriculture (Cepagri-Unicamp), Ana Ávila, this fluctuation is common at this time of year and occurs due to the action of a high pressure system over the region. "This situation is quite common when we are under the influence of high pressure, which is nothing more than the descent of air from the atmosphere towards the surface. This air arrives at the surface drier and inhibits the formation of clouds." ? During the day, solar radiation passes through the atmosphere easily and heats the ground, quickly raising temperatures. At night, however, the reverse process happens. Temperatures drop quickly because there are no clouds. The phenomenon is called radioactive loss. That's why, in just a few hours, the sensation can completely change. "Everything that was stored during the day with solar radiation is quickly lost to the atmosphere. So, we don't have that heat stored and temperatures drop sharply during the night", explains Ana. Intense cold favors another type of problem. "When it's very cold, people tend to stay indoors more. Children spend more time at school and we look for warm environments. This encourages viral trends," he says. In other words: while a dry afternoon can trigger allergies, the cold in the morning and evening favors the circulation of respiratory viruses in closed environments. How to protect yourself? The experts' recommendation is to adopt simple precautions to face days with large temperature variations. The main one is dressing in layers. This way, you can remove your jacket as it warms up throughout the day and wear it again when the temperature drops. "The first thing is to have several layers of clothing to adapt as the day goes on, stay hydrated and be concerned about people who may suffer more from these temperatures, such as children and the elderly", advises Gerusa. Hydration deserves attention, even on cold days. "It is important to use a saline solution in the nose, eye drops and, indoors, a humidifier or even a wet towel. This helps to increase humidity, reduce dust suspended in the air and reduce allergic conditions." Care is even more important for children, the elderly and people with respiratory diseases, who tend to feel more intensely the effects of the combination of cold, heat and low air humidity.
