The executive fired all 900 employees on December 1, 2021. "If you are on this call, you are part of an unlucky group that is being fired. Your contract here will be immediately terminated," Garg said at the time, in a video obtained by CNN Business.
Christian Chapman, one of those fired, with more than 20 years at the company, classified the moment as surreal. "It was one of those things you don't believe is going to happen," Chapman said at the time, in an interview with CNN Business.
Chapman said Garg didn't even wait for all the employees to log in and announced the mass layoffs within three minutes.
Those laid off were part of teams such as recruitment, diversity and inclusion and represented 9% of the staff strength.
At the time, Garg said in the video call that the layoffs were motivated by the performance and productivity of employees and the search for market efficiency. "I don't want to do this. The last time I did this, I cried," he said during the call.
The executive even apologized for the way he handled the dismissal, however, in the same month, the company removed Garg with "immediate effect", by decision of the company's board of directors.
The following month, in January 2022, Garg returned to his role as the company's CEO. At the time, Garg consulted with a corporate coach and stated that he reflected on his leadership during the period he was away.
